“And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.” -Hebrews 11:11
Say what? This same Sarah that decided upon herself that since she was barren, her husband should sleep with her servant and have a child with her? That this child would be the one that the Lord promised?
Two points here to see:
- Sometimes it is hard to trust in the Lord completely when your spouse is rationalizing His will in a way that is less faithful, even disobedient! The love you have for your spouse must not supersede your love for God. Jesus reminded us of this danger when speaking about love for family when He said, “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” -Matthew 10:37. The fallen one works best through the ones we love the most.
- God doesn’t look at your history and see what you’ve done in order to count you faithful. When you become faithful, He looks at that example instead of where you failed in your faith. If God looks at us this way, we should also see the best in people instead of where they went wrong.
